If democracy is to survive, the basic values of equality, freedom and fraternity must be imbided by the citizens. Without social and economic equality, freedom to think and act, and fraternity based on respect, tolerance and compassion for each other, democracy may degenerate into a mere formal eectoral game between warring groups.
