Pulses are the basic ingredient in the diets of a vast majority of the Indian population, as they provide a perfect mix of vegetarian protein component of high biological value when supplemented with cereals. India is the largest producer, consumer importer and processor of pulses in the world. The important pulses crops commonly grown in India are chickpea (48 per cent), pigeonopea (15 per cent), mungbean (7 per cent), urdbean (7 per cent), lentil (5 per cent), and fieldpea (5 per cent). The chapters in the book provide a current and detailed account of biotic and abiotic constraints that hamper pulse crops. The book has a comprehensive coverage of occurrence, distribution, economic importance, symptoms of biotic and abiotic constraints, disease cycle, epidemiology and sustainable management strategies. We hope that this edited book would help the students, teachers researchers, policy makers and stakeholders to foster agricultural development.
