About Eardley Norton: Eardley Norton (1852 - 1931) was a barrister, politician, poet and raconteur, among his many distinctions and skills. The Times (London) described him as "the foremost among Advocates in India." Many were the sensational cases, including the Alipore Bomb Case, a landmark event in the history of the Indian national struggle, in which he had appeared. In politics, he was a front rank leader in the Indian National Congress in its earliest phase. He laboured assiduously for the fulfilment of India's then political aspirations. In a remarkable life filled with eventful activities, there also were defeats and setbacks. A scandalous affair had devastating repercussions on his political career. In the ultimate analysis, he was known and is remembered as one of India's greatest friends. About the Book: This book is thus far the only comprehensive biography of one who was almost a legend in his lifetime. Straddling both biography and history, this book also presents in outline the story of the earliest phase and glimpses of a few later phases of the Indian national struggle. A number of historical personalities, who were Norton's contemporaries, strut the stage in this work. It is hoped that this book will make a compelling appeal to all those who are interested to read literature on Indian political and constitutional history, Indian legal history, general history relating to Madras and other places associated with Norton's life, and biographical writings.
