About Eardley Norton: Eardley Norton (1852 - 1931) was a barrister, politician, poet and raconteur, among his many distinctions and skills. The Times (London) described him as "the foremost among Advocates in India." Many were the sensational cases, including the Alipore Bomb Case, a landmark event in the history of the Indian national struggle, in which he had appeared. In politics, he was a front rank leader in the Indian National Congress in its earliest phase. He laboured assiduously for the fulfilment of India's then political aspirations. In a remarkable life filled with eventful activities, there also were defeats and setbacks. A scandalous affair had devastating repercussions on his political career. In the ultimate analysis, he was known and is remembered as one of India's greatest friends.
