A Handbook of Basics on Clinical and Applied Ocular Microbiology
Optometrists are healthcare professionals who provide primary vision care ranging from sight testing and correction to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision changes, which involves eye exams and vision tests, detecting certain eye abnormalities and prescribing medications for certain eye diseases and infections. The course on ocular microbiology is prescribed to understand the basic and applied aspects of microbiology so that can characterize the bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and parasites which can infect the lids, conjunctiva, and cornea and how they may be influenced by the wear of contact lenses.
The objective of the book is to prepare the students to gain essential knowledge about basic microbiology like the classification of microbes and their characteristics. It focuses to cover the principles of sterilization and disinfection in hospital and ophthalmic practice. It explains the pathogenesis of the diseases caused by microorganisms in the human body with reference to eye infections and disease. The subject matter has been planned in a systematic manner for understanding the basic principles of diagnostic ocular microbiology, inflammation, and effective treatment using simple language, clear illustrations and unto date information.
The textbook covering the entire width of the prescribed syllabus into seven sections and twenty chapters: The sections focus on Microbiology – Introduction, classification and physiology and control of growth; Bacteriology; Mycology; Virology; Parasitology; Diagnosis of ocular infections; Diagnostic tools, and techniques; Ocular Disease and its manifestations and a dedicated chapter on the WHO Priority Pathogens List for R&D updates.
